Statistics on test scores

These statistics are based on combined data from lecture sections L01 and L02. (Distributions of marks were very similar for the two sections.)

Here is a histogram of scores out of 56. Each star in a bar of the bar graph is one paper. For example, the first line says that 8 students scored 55 or 56 out of 56.

55-56 ********
50-54 ************************************************
45-49 ************************************
40-44 ******************************
35-39 **********************
30-34 *****************
25-29 *********
20-24 *****
10-19 ***
Here are some statistics:
number of papers marked: 178

highest score: 56 / 56
75th percentile score: 52 / 56 (this score is better than 3/4 of the scores)
median score: 45 / 56 (this score is better than 1/2 of the scores)
25th percentile score: 37 / 56 (this score is better than 1/4 of the scores)

average score: 43.0 / 56
standard deviation: 9.6 points

Unofficial, approximate letter grade equivalents

These are UNOFFICIAL, and apply only to the mid-session test. We do NOT promise to use the same scale when we convert your overall course score to a letter grade.

This was a straightforward test, and a bit easier than some midterm tests given in this course So the minimum mark for a C- is a little above 50 percent.

SCORE OUT OF 56 APPROXIMATE LETTER GRADE EQUIVALENT

  50-56 A-, A, or A+
  40-49 B-, B, or B+
  30-39 C-, C, or C+
   0-29 D, D+ or F

Reminder: You must get at least 40 percent on the final exam to pass the course; to have a chance of getting C- or higher, you need at least 50 percent on the final.
