General Advice

Please keep in mind that topic coverage has varied from year to year:

Topic coverage changed a little between 2004 and 2005 due to the switch to the 3rd edition of the textbook.
New and important for 2009! A processor design called the `multi-cycle machine', which was not pipelined, and which had a finite state machine for a main control unit, was covered in the 2nd and 3rd editions of the textbook. Coverage of this design does not appear in the 4th edition, and so this design will not be covered in the Winter 2009 version of ENCM 369. Do not spend time trying to understand the old exam problems related to the `multi-cycle machine'.
The `single-cycle machine' in Chapter 4 of the 4th edition is the same as the `single-cycle machine' in Chapter 5 of the 3rd edition. You can expect a problem or two related to this design on the 2009 exam.
The 2009 exam may have a problem or two related to the material in Sections 4.6-4.9 of the 4th edition. No previous version of the course covered this material, so you won't find any old exam questions on it.

Figure numbers in exams from 2001 to 2004 refer to the 2nd edition of the textbook, but the designs of the single-cycle and multicycle machines of Chapter 5 did not change from the 2nd edition to the 3rd. In all of the 2001-2004 papers, I have tried to add text indicating changes in figure numbers, but I might have missed a few places where figure numbers are mentioned.
