Qom located some 120km South West of Tehran is a kind of
religion capital of Iran. Qom hosts the tomb of Hazrat Masumeh (AS)
sister of Imam Reza (AS). Many religious schools are located around
the Hazrat Masumeh Sanctuary, dedicated to Islamic teaching. Students
called "talabeh" from all around the world come to Qom to learn more
about Islam. It takes at least 20-30 years to master the Quran and
Hadith and become an Ayatollah. Those who can come up with this are
the would be religious leaders in their own region or countries.
Note that non Muslim men or women are not admitted to the Hazrat Masumeh Sanctuary. Also being in Qom, dress and behavioral code should be obeyed. Qom was the center of movement against Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi that ended with toppling his regime in 1979 and establishing Islamic Republic of Iran. |
