- Abstract

"Learning Function of Devices Using Qualitative
Function Formation Technique,"
- Transactions/Magazines/Conferences:
- Proc. 日本機械学会 第二回FANシンポジウム 講演論文集,
Nagoya, Japan, October 1992, pp. 293-298.
- Abstract
- The goal of this research is developing methods for categorizing and
learning function of objects from a formal description of their structure
and behavior using Functional Reasoning (FR). A collective view on FR
theories and techniques is presented, common assumptions and basic problems
are identified. Qualitative Function Formation (QFF) technique is introduced.
Some novel points are extending the common qualitative models to include
interactions and timing of events, by defining coordinative relations,
temporal and dependency constraints, and binding it with the conventional
qualitative simulation. A function concept is defined as an interpretation
of a persistence or an order in the sequence of qualitative states. Examples
of application of QFF in categorization and learning function of objects are
given.

"Functional Reasoning, Explanation and Analysis:
Qualitative Function Formation Technique,"
- Transactions/Magazines/Conferences:

Tokyo, Japan, June 1992, pp. 229-232.
- Abstract
- Functional Reasoning enables people to reason about the presence and function of components in a device, derive the purpose of the device and explain how it can be achieved. Qualitative Function Formation (QFF) a functional reasoning technique is introduced. Some novel points are extending the common qualitative models to include interactions and timing of events, by defining temporal and dependency constraints, and binding it with the conventional qualitative simulation. A function concept is defined as an interpretation of either a persistence or an order in the sequence of qualitative states, using the trace of the qualitative state vector derived by simulation on the extended qualitative model. QFF offers solution to the functional reasoning problems and is used to generalize and compare the functions of devices.

"Structural Way of Thinking As Applied to Good Design
(Part 3, Reducing Programming Errors),"
- Transactions/Magazines/Conferences:
- Proceedings IEEE Global Communications Conf., GLOBECOM' 92,
Florida, USA, December 1992, pp. 525-531.
- Abstract
- Abstract This paper explains programming errors from the
view point of human errors. Programming error problems
may be analyzed by separating two factors "build-in" during
design and various "check out" following the design. Though
separating error problems, key points for reducing
programming errors may be reduced to how to make
"build-in" rate small and how to make "perfect check-out".
Error problems during design, testing and the progress of
quality are explained. Various suggestions for reducing errors
are given.

- Abstract
- This paper reports a basic study aiming at quantitative, rational and scientific control of software developments. Man-hours for a work shows a constancy when normalized by a suitable factor. In software developments, however, most such figures do not show enough constancy, except a gross average. This paper shows causes of such variations: such as work procedure, work process, normalizing factor, documentation, failure rate during testing, work ability and morale. It was found that learning effect appears during developments. The learning process with feedback from past experiences is the vital factor for improving the process and thus resulting in smaller variations.

"HASP: Human Acts Simulation Program,"
- Transactions/Magazines/Conferences:
- Proc. of Specialists Meeting on Applications of AI
and Robotics to Nuclear Plants, (AIR' 92),
pp. 120-130, May 1992.
- Abstract
- In Human Acts Simulation Program (HASP), human acts to be realized by a human shaped intelligent robot in a nuclear power plant are simulated by computers. HASP started as a ten-year program at JAERI in 1987. The purpose of HASP is to develop basic and underlying design technologies for intelligent robots, to develop basic technologies for an advanced intelligent and automatic nuclear power plant and to provide artificial intelligence techniques for researchers in the nuclear field. In this paper, the contents of HASP and some results obtained so far are described.
