Thank you for your interest in the graduate program at the University of Calgary, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Please read the following information carefully before applying.

Degree Programs

  • Master of Science (MSc)
  • Master of Engineering (MEng) - Course based
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must hold or obtain the following minimum qualifications before the Faculty of Graduate Studies will consider admission:

  • A University of Calgary four-year baccalaureate degree or an equivalent degree from a recognized institution. Degrees and grades from foreign institutions are evaluated for their equivalency to those of the University of Calgary.
  • Applicants with non-engineering degrees or engineering degrees in other fields will be required to satisfactorily complete make-up courses for background preparation upon commencement of their graduate program.
  • An admission grade point average of 3.00 or higher (on the University of Calgary four-point system) is required. This is based on the last two years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of 10 full-course (or 20 half-course) equivalents.

The department receives applications from many more students than can possibly be admitted, only the most qualified are considered, and in most cases only students with first-class academic standing are admitted. Our experience indicates that applicants must have academic backgrounds within the general requirements listed below:

Canadian and American Universities

A GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 point system (72 percent or better) during your last two undergraduate years or 20 courses, whichever is greater is required. If you have taken less than 20 courses in the last two years, we count back in increments of one term. All courses in a term must be used and not simply the best 20 courses. You cannot split a term to obtain a total of 20 courses.

International Universities

Information on international admissions may be obtained from the Faculty of Graduate Studies website: http:www.grad.ucalgary.ca/internationalrequirements

English Language Proficiency

Students whose primary language is not English are required to provide proof of proficiency in English by passing the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination with a score of 550 minimum paper-based or 213 computer-based or 80 internet-based. Applicants may also provide a proof of proficiency in English by passing the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination with a minimum of 7.0. Students with scores that are more than two years old must re-write the examination. Full admission will not be granted before the Faculty of Graduate Studies receives the official or verified test score.
